How Much Food Do We Waste?

The world is getting really fat and really hungry all at the same time.

On the one hand, one-third of the global population is expected to be overweight or obese by 2030, according to the Global Panel on Agriculture and Food Systems for Nutrition.

On the other hand, almost 800 million people go hungry every day around the world and more than 2 billion don’t get the nutrients they need for a healthy life.

  • Global food waste has significant financial, ethical, and environmental costs.
  • 1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted globally each year, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. That’s one-third of all food produced for human consumption
  • The amount of food lost or wasted costs 2.6 trillion USD annually and is enough to feed all the 815 million hungry people in the world – four times over.
  • Some waste cannot be avoided. But are we wasting too much?
